How much does a website cost in Australia?

The short answer
- Do it yourself on a website builder: A$20 to A$150 a month, plus your own time.
- Hire an Australian freelancer: A$1,500 to A$2,500 and up for the build.
- Hire an Australian agency: A$3,000 to A$7,000 for a small studio, A$6,000 to A$25,000 and beyond for established agencies.
- Typical professional small business site: A$2,000 to A$5,000.
- Running costs afterwards: around A$15 to A$30 a year for a .com.au domain, a few dollars a month for shared hosting, and A$50 to A$150 a month for maintenance plans.
Most Australian small businesses that hire a professional pay between A$2,000 and A$5,000 for a straightforward site, and noticeably more in Sydney and Melbourne. Check whether quotes include GST; many are shown excluding it. The rest of this page explains what moves the number, and where you can cut it safely.
How much does a website cost in Australia by provider?
Website builders such as Wix, Squarespace or Shopify run A$20 to A$150 a month. The entry price is low, but the design, the writing and the search optimisation are your job, and after a few years the subscription has cost more than a professional build.
Freelancers in Australia typically charge A$1,500 to A$2,500 for a small business site, with experienced independents going higher. Quality varies with the individual, and so does continuity if they change careers mid-hosting-renewal.
Agencies quote A$3,000 to A$7,000 at the smaller end and A$6,000 to A$25,000 and up in the capital cities. Published Australian pricing guides put complex projects with e-commerce, bookings or integrations at A$10,000 to A$25,000 and beyond. A share of every city agency invoice is office space and account management time.
How much does each type of website cost?
- One-page site: A$800 to A$2,000 from a freelancer.
- Brochure website (five to ten pages that present the business): A$2,000 to A$5,000 at Australian market rates.
- Small business site with blog and FAQ: A$4,000 to A$8,000.
- Online store: A$10,000 and up for custom work, or Shopify with its monthly fees and apps.
How much does it cost to run a website in Australia?
A .com.au domain costs roughly A$15 to A$30 a year. Shared hosting starts at a few dollars a month. Maintenance plans from Australian providers commonly run A$50 to A$150 a month; over five years that is A$3,000 to A$9,000, which quietly exceeds many build quotes. Only pay monthly for what is genuinely monthly.
Is A$2,000 a good price for a website?
At Australian rates, A$2,000 is the entry point for professional work, usually a template adapted by a freelancer. It is a fair price if it includes mobile layouts, working forms, basic on-page search optimisation and your content properly placed. If those appear as add-ons, or the quote excludes GST and revisions, the real number is higher.
Does working with an overseas team make sense from Australia?
Honestly: it depends on the overseas team. The time difference with Europe is eight to ten hours, which cuts both ways. Your afternoon overlaps with our morning, so calls are easy to place; and work you brief in the evening is being built while you sleep, then waiting for you the next morning. What matters is fixed scope, fixed price and written communication, which is how we run every project anyway.
How to pay less without getting a worse site
- Separate the build from the maintenance. One payment for the site, monthly only for hosting or changes you actually request.
- Insist on a fixed price for a defined site. A brochure site is a known quantity; hourly billing moves the risk onto you.
- Compare beyond your suburb. Sites are built remotely; Sydney office rent does not have to be in your invoice.
- Keep ownership. Domain and site in your name, no exit fees, no proprietary platform you cannot leave.
Where Grateau fits
We build brochure websites at a fixed price of €299, one payment, which is about A$500 at current exchange rates. Delivered in five business days: up to thirty pages, custom design, mobile, on-page search optimisation, blog, FAQ, contact form and legal pages. Hosting and maintenance are separate and optional, with no lock-in, and everything stays yours.
That price is possible because the production work is done by AI agents working in parallel, with our developers setting the plan and reviewing every page. It is not the right answer for everything: if you need an online store, bookings or an integration with your own systems, you are in the A$10,000 and up band and should budget accordingly.
